County Comp Plan on the Road

La Plata County is taking its draft strategies for the proposed comprehensive plan on the road. Citizen input and involvement are crucial starting now and going forward. Tonight (8/5) 5:00 pm at the Smiley building in Durango is the first of a series of meetings being held around the County. Go to the County's website for more detail on other meeting dates, locations and download a copy of the draft plan. http://www.laplatacountyplan.com/

Taxes on MMJ

The Durango Herald reported today I do not support a tax on medical marijuana (MMJ), while the other candidates do. This is true for now, for two reasons. One, my starting position to the government budget crisis is to not immediately run to a new tax increase of any sort, until, a legitimate case has been built for doing so, it has been completed vetted in the public, and the intended uses of the revenue and public benefit have been clearly defined. Government has to first learn to live within its means before it can ask the public to reach back into its pockets.

1st Fundraising Deadline

At the end of first campaign finance reporting period, we are already in the lead on fundraising, but I really need everyone's help to keep the campaign alive. Hey, look! You can donate online, right here at GoLaplata.com. See how the Herald reported on all the candidates' fundraising efforts.

Dear La Plata County Citizens,

It is with humble intentions that I announce my candidacy for La Plata County Commissioner in 2010. It would be a great honor to serve the citizens of La Plata County, and in so doing, would respect the position, the government, and serve the people with the highest level of dignity and integrity.

For the last ten years, I have served the community as executive director of the La Plata Economic Development Action Partnership (LEAD), Durango Chamber of Commerce, and more recently as project manager for the Airport Business Park. The key drive has always been to uplift the standard of living for all residents of our county, and provide opportunities for future generations beyond their educational years. A leadership role in La Plata County government is my passionate attempt to promote this critical need in our community.

La Plata County, like all other communities in this nation, is experiencing an economic downturn not seen since the great depression. This detrimental cycle has not only had an impact on peoples’ jobs, but has exacerbated societal problems and put strains on local governments to maintain necessary levels of service. For at least the next two years, La Plata County government is going to be faced with a budget crisis that will greatly challenge county leadership. My past experience in business, operating non-profits, and service on the La Plata Electric Board of Directors among others, equips me with the necessary skills and character to help the county navigate these tough times. Concurrently, I intend to establish the foundations that will enable our community to emerge stronger and better.

I hope I can count on your support.

Sincerely,
